Councilman Christopher D. James

1st Ward

Committed Public Servant, Advocate for East Orange, and Community Leader

Christopher D. James, born in Orange and raised in Newark, NJ, has proudly dedicated his life to public service, with a particular focus on the growth and development of East Orange. First elected to the East Orange City Council’s 1st Ward on November 5, 2013, Chris has been a steadfast advocate for the people of East Orange, working tirelessly to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met.

Chris’ passion for public service was ignited at a young age, inspired by his mother’s tireless work for the late Congressman Donald M. Payne, Sr. It was through her that Chris learned the true meaning of public service: "It’s not about what you get, but what you give." This early lesson set Chris on a path to dedicate his life to helping others and strengthening communities, particularly East Orange, his hometown.

For over 20 years, Chris has honed his skills in government, policymaking, and community organizing, gaining a reputation as a skilled problem-solver, mediator, and negotiator. His leadership has been instrumental in moving legislation forward, advocating for the needs of residents, and creating opportunities for communities like East Orange to thrive.

Beyond his work on the East Orange City Council, Chris has served in several key roles, including Chief of Staff to the Honorable Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver and Deputy Executive Director of the Assembly Majority Office. As Executive Director of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, Chris helped elect historic leaders like U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver, all while ensuring that East Orange had a seat at the table in critical state and national decisions.

Currently, as Vice President of External Affairs at RWJBarnabas Health, New Jersey’s largest healthcare system, Chris continues to serve his community by improving healthcare access and outcomes. He has spearheaded initiatives that support East Orange residents, including partnering with Uber Health to provide transportation for medical appointments and helping establish “Food Pharmacies” to ensure access to fresh food for those in need.

Chris remains deeply connected to his roots in East Orange and is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents. His work on the East Orange City Council has focused on addressing issues like affordable housing, public safety, and community development, always prioritizing the voices of his neighbors.

Chris is also actively involved in various community organizations, including the NJ Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, NJ Shares (Board President 2018-2024), Beautiful Brownies, and the Newark Alliance. He is proud to serve on the Executive Committee of Democratic Municipal Officials and as President of the NJ Democratic Municipal Officials (2020-2024), continuing to champion East Orange's interests on the state and national stage.

With a deep commitment to his community and a lifelong passion for public service, Chris D. James remains dedicated to shaping a brighter future for East Orange, ensuring that all residents have the opportunities, resources, and support they need to thrive.
